Growing Strong, Staying Young
The Growing Strong, Staying Young program is based on the StrongWomen Program, a national fitness program for women developed by Dr. Miriam E. Nelson, Director, John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition, at Tufts University. While the StrongWomen Program was designed for middle-aged and older women, the benefits of the program are applicable to men and women of all ages. Therefore, the name has been adapted as we welcome both men and women to participate and reap the long-term benefits of strength training.
Scientific research has demonstrated that exercise with weights (strength training) will increase strength, muscle mass and bone density in middle-aged and older women. Strengthening exercises also reduce the risk for numerous chronic diseases, positively affect psychological health, reduce depression and improve sleep. As people age, muscle loss occurs because of under use of the muscle and is replaced by fat. A gradual decrease in bone density occurs. Pain and stiffness within joints increases as arthritis develops. With increased strength, muscle mass, bone density and balance, all potential benefits of regular strength training, daily tasks become easier to master. Scientifically proven benefits of strength training for middle-aged and older women include:
-
Arthritis relief
-
Restoration of balance
-
Strengthening of bone
-
Proper weight maintenance
-
Sleep Improvement
-
Improved glucose control
-
Healthy state of mind
-
Healthy heart tissue
Growing Strong, Staying Young offers men and women an opportunity to reap the many benefits of strength training while at the same time providing them with a vehicle to maintain functional status and independence as they grow older.
Participation in this 12-week program provides men and women the opportunity to improve their health and well-being through structured, safe, and effective strength-training.
