4-H Grows Life Skills and Carrots

The Leon County 4-H Horticulture Club meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at the Leon County Extension Office.

Youth ages 8 – 18 learn plant science through activities such as gardening, composting, and plant identification. Over a year ago, club members decided to take their education to a new level by planting four raised-bed gardens at the Extension Office. Since that time, youth have been learning about north Florida’s vegetable growing seasons, vegetable rotation necessary to replenish your soil, and much more!

Yesterday, youth harvested carrots and sugar snap peas that were planted earlier in the year:

Leon County Master Gardener Susan Voss is sharing her expertise with the Leon County 4-H Horticulture Club by showing its members how to make a Terrarium. The youth are planning on making Terrariums to serve as table settings for the 2012 Leon County Sustainability Summit at the Turnball Center. Leon County 4-H Horticulture Takes 1st Place At Congress

Congratulations to our Leon County 4-H Horticulture Senior Team of Jonathan Fondo, Chet Ptachick, Rogers Horne, and Cody Ptachick for competing in the State 4-H Horticulture Contest and taking 1st Place. The contest was held in Gainesville Florida during our Statewide 4-H Congress Event. The team qualified for the National 4-H Horticultural Contest that’s scheduled to be held in Wisconsin in October. Cody and Rogers also placed third with their illustrated talk on “Fundamentals of Archery”. Great job guys! Keep Making The Best Better!

Apalachee Students Eat What Garden Grows

A focus group of fourth and fifth grade students at Apalachee Tapestry Magnet School of the Arts spent 45 minutes, two days a week, during the 2011-2012 school year learning how fitness, wellness, and nutrition combine to create a healthy lifestyle. Group leader and Physical Education Teacher, Wayne Prevatt, contacted the local 4-H Office to help him create a long-lasting, capstone experience for his focus group students.

Leon County 4-H Agent, Stefanie L. Duda, and Master Gardener volunteers from UF/IFAS Extension visited Apalachee to teach the students about raised-bed gardening. For eight weeks, Prevatt taught his students the basics of horticulture, how math applies to gardening, the science behind soil composition, and how vegetables benefit the body.

The final activity of the year – hands-on cooking – taught youth how to make healthy, flat-bread pizzas covered in the same kind of vegetables that were planted in their garden. In a great display of generosity, the students served a delicious, healthy lunch to the hard-working staff and teachers at ATMSA!

Visit Your Demonstration Gardens

Did you know that you have a public garden in Tallahassee that you can visit anytime to get new ideas for your home gardens?

The demonstration gardens of the Leon County Extension center of University of Florida IFAS are planted and maintained by the Master Gardener volunteers. The gardens include landscape plants, vegetable and herb areas, an area for xerophytic plants, and wildlife habitat areas. The overall objective of the gardens is to demonstrate the use of Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles to the community: Right Plant, Right Place - Water Efficiently - Fertilize Appropriately – Mulch – Attract Wildlife – Manage Yard Pests Responsibly – Recycle – Reduce Storm Water Runoff – Protect the Waterfront
